Lagos Police command discipline officers for assaulting a lady

The Lagos State Police Command said yesterday that it has subjected officers seen in a video where they assaulted a lady in Ilasan, Lagos, to disciplinary action.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force guarding the palace at Ilasan, Lekki Phase 1, were captured in the video assaulting the lady when she attempted to record them during a conversation with an Uber driver. The lady’s phone was seized, and she was also arrested.

Reacting to the matter on Twitter when his attention was called to it, police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the state command should investigate all information relating to the incident.

“Well, Ben will need to investigate this and take the necessary action,” he said, referring to Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command. “We will need to get more facts about this scene as the video is not long enough to deduce some things. PPRO Lagos should detail the PCB to look into this and revert.”

Responding to the incident, Hundeyin said: “It is not a crime to record a policemen on duty as long as it does not obstruct duty.

“The Divisional Police Officer, Ilasan, waded in. He ensured the lady got her phone back immediately and subjected the officers to disciplinary actions.

“The lady claimed she was injured, for which the officer was mandated to offset her medical expense. The lady went home happy. I equally verified from her.

A source told us that though the lady did not sustain any “serious injury,” the DPO insisted the officers gave her money, as punishment for their action.

In a chat with Joy Ene, the lady who was assaulted, she admitted that she was paid to treat her wounds. She told newsmen that she got her phone back, was satisfied, and would not be pressing charges.
