Force Headquarters has reacted to allegations of approving Ak-47s for Katsina state security outfit.
Ondo State governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, had accused the Federal Government of bias in refusing to allow the Western Nigeria Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, to bear sophisticated firearms.
Reacting to the allegation, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, told The Nation correspondent that the police were not aware of any approval and letter.
Adejobi said: “I am not even aware of any letter, so maybe you find out from the Presidency. The letter was not addressed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) or Nigeria Police Force (NPF), so we won’t know its content.”
The statement issued by the governor on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Richard Olatunde, said denying Amotekun the right to bear arms, according to the governor, would expose the Southwest to life-threatening marauders and organised crime.
The video making the rounds showing the equivalent of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps) in Katsina obtaining Federal Government’s approval to bear arms is fraught with great dangers.
“Denying Amotekun the urgently needed rights to legitimately bear arms is a repudiation of the basis of true federalism, which we have been clamouring for.
